What is an ABA Therapist?

An ABA therapist is a trained professional specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a scientifically validated autism therapy service for individuals with autism and related developmental disorders. ABA therapists work closely with individuals to implement behavior interventions, teach new skills, and promote positive behaviors while reducing interfering ones.

Meet Our BCBA and Behavior Technician Team

Our team of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) at Bierman Autism Centers brings experience, compassion, and dedication to each child’s journey.

With specialized training in ABA techniques and a deep understanding of autism, our team creates a supportive and engaging environment for meaningful progress, skill development, and essential resources for children and their families.

What is a BCBA and What Role Do They Play in Autism Care?

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a qualified professional specializing in behavior analysis and treatment. They use a therapeutic approach called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help clients improve their behaviors and achieve specific goals.

BCBAs hold a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as behavior analysis, education, or psychology, have completed supervised fieldwork experience, and have passed a certification exam. They are qualified to design, oversee, and implement ABA therapy programs for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Their primary role includes:

Conducting Comprehensive Assessments

Our team utilizes various assessment tools and techniques to gain a deep understanding of each child's strengths, interfering behaviors, preferences, and developmental goals. This includes identifying not only areas of strength but also specific interfering behaviors that may impact learning and daily functioning.

Collaboration and Communication

Our team proudly collaborates closely with families, caregivers, educators, and other professionals involved in your child's care. This collaborative approach ensures consistency in interventions across settings (home, school, community) and promotes a holistic understanding of the child's needs and progress. Regular communication and caregiver collaboration sessions empower families with knowledge and strategies to support their child's development.

Designing Individualized
Treatment Plans

We develop highly personalized treatment plans tailored to each child's unique needs based on assessment results. These plans outline specific goals, targeted interventions, and strategies to foster skill development, behavior, and overall progress.

Providing Ongoing Training
and Support

We offer continuous training and support to families, empowering them with practical strategies to reinforce learning and promote positive behaviors at home and in community settings. This includes guidance on implementing behavior management techniques, communication strategies, social skills support, and creating supportive environments for skill generalization and independence.

Data Collection and Analysis

We systematically collect data during therapy sessions, analyze progress trends, and make data-driven decisions to adjust strategies and optimize outcomes.

What Does a Behavior Technician Do?

At Bierman Autism Centers, our ABA therapists are referred to as behavior technicians.

These behavioral health professionals use ABA therapy to help children improve interfering behaviors and develop new, helpful ones. They focus on observable behaviors and use evidence-based techniques to create positive changes.

Our Behavior Technicians (BTs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) apply scientifically validated ABA techniques and principles to teach a wide range of skills essential for daily life. These include, but are not limited to, communication (verbal and nonverbal), social interaction, academic readiness, self-help skills, and adaptive behaviors.

All of the skills our behavior technicians teach come from carefully crafted treatment plans designed by our Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

BCBA vs. BT

When it comes to ABA therapy, there are two main types of professionals you might encounter: BCBAs and BTs.

Think of a BCBA as the head coach. They have a master’s degree and special certification, making them the experts who design your child’s personalized ABA therapy program. They also supervise the team, which can include BTs.

BTs are like the players on the team. They work directly with your child, implementing the ABA therapy program designed by the BCBA. To become a BT, they typically need to undergo training and get a separate certification. But they always work under the guidance of a BCBA.
