Focused Therapy at Bierman Autism Centers

Focused Therapy is a goal-specific approach to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Instead of addressing a broad range of developmental skills at once, a focused plan centers on a narrower set of priorities: building a specific skill, addressing a particular behavior, or supporting a transition.

It’s delivered by the same clinical team, follows the same evidence-based practices, and includes the same individualized planning as our Comprehensive Therapy programs. The difference is scope. A focused plan targets a specific set of objectives with fewer weekly hours.

Who is Focused Therapy for?

Focused Therapy tends to be a good fit when:

  • A child’s clinical needs are specific and well-defined, rather than broad
  • A child has already made meaningful progress in comprehensive ABA and is ready for a narrower focus
  • A family’s schedule or circumstances call for a more limited weekly commitment
  • A particular skill, behavior, or transition is the primary clinical priority

Comprehensive Therapy remains the recommended fit for most children, particularly those with broader developmental needs. Our clinical team works with every family to determine the right path forward.

How it works

  1. Reach out to our Intake Team to share your child’s needs and your family’s goals.
  2. We’ll conduct an initial assessment to understand where your child is and what they’re working toward.
  3. Our BCBA team develops an individualized plan (Focused or Comprehensive) based on clinical recommendations and family fit.
  4. Therapy begins with ongoing progress reviews and plan adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Focused Therapy the same as part-time ABA?

Focused Therapy typically involves fewer weekly hours than Comprehensive Therapy, but the difference is more about clinical focus than schedule. A focused plan targets a specific set of goals rather than the full developmental picture.

Can we start with Focused Therapy and move to Comprehensive?

Yes, and in either direction. Plans are reviewed regularly, and families can transition between service levels as clinical needs evolve.

Is Focused Therapy as effective as Comprehensive?

Both are evidence-based when matched to the right clinical profile. Focused Therapy is most effective when clinical goals are specific and well-defined. Comprehensive Therapy is most effective when there are broader developmental needs to address simultaneously. Research shows that for young children with delays across multiple developmental areas, more intensive Comprehensive Therapy leads to stronger outcomes. Our BCBAs determine the right approach for your child through a comprehensive intake assessment.

How do I know which is right for my child?

Our intake and clinical teams will work with you to make that recommendation, based on your child’s assessment, goals, and family circumstances.

Will my insurance cover Focused Therapy?

Coverage varies by payer and plan. Our intake team can help verify benefits and discuss your options.
